When the Mexican Gold Libertad’s proof coin debuted for regular release in 2004, only a 1/4 oz. coin was available. The following year in 2005, the Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin was available with 1/20 oz. and 1/10 oz. coins, as well as new 1/2 oz. Proof Mexican Gold Libertads and 1 oz. coins.

The mintage figures for the Proof Mexican Gold Libertad have always been incredibly low. While American Gold Eagle proofs, for example, have mintage figures in excess of 100,000, the largest production of 1/4 oz. Proof Mexican Gold Proof Libertad coins was 380 coins in 2011. The figures have never surpassed 400 coins in any other year.

On the obverse of all 1/4 oz. Proof Mexican Gold Libertad coins you’ll find the image of the statue of Winged Victory. Reflective of the actual statue erected in Mexico City in 1921, Winged Victory represents the victory of Mexico over Spain in the War of Independence.

The reverse of the 2011 1/4 oz. Proof Mexican Gold Libertad coin includes the coat of arms for Mexico. Though 10 versions of the seal have been used since the 1820s, this is the modern version and the only one that appears on the reverse of fractional-weight Mexican Libertads. Coins larger than 1 oz. feature all 10 historic versions as well.

Founded in 1535, the Mexican Mint is the official sovereign mint of the nation of Mexico. It was founded by Spanish conquistadors and once served as the sole mint of the Spanish Empire in the Western Hemisphere.
