During World War II, from 1942 to 1945, the composition of the Jefferson nickel changed due to the shortage of nickel metal. During this period, the nickel in the coins was replaced by a composition of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. These wartime nickels weigh 1.59 grams. Prior to the wartime period and after, Jefferson nickels are composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams each. Regardless of the composition, all Jefferson nickels have a standard diameter of 21.2 mm.
