Product Details

Explore the ancient world of Ancient Rome with this AD 86-305 Roman Maximianus, minted in Rome and certified by ANACS as Very Fine 30. This exceptional coin provides a direct link to a significant period in Roman history, showcasing the legacy of past Caesar and Augustus from AD 286-305.

The emperor depicted on this coin, reigning alongside Diocletian from AD 286 to 305, was Maximianus. He was in charge of the Western territories, successfully quelling uprisings within the local populations and repelling a Germanic invasion in Gaul. However, his efforts to quell Carausius’s rebellion in Gaul and Britain were unsuccessful; this occurred prior to the establishment of the tetrarchy system. In 293, Constantius Chlorus was named Caesar under Maximian and tasked with handling these troublesome regions, allowing Maximian to focus on ruling Italy, Spain, and Africa.

While historically seen as an oppressor of Christianity, Maximian’s actions against Christians were limited to enforcing Diocletian’s initial decree, which mandated the destruction of Christian scriptures and the shutdown of their places of worship. On the same day Diocletian stepped down in Nicomedia, May 1, 305, Maximian also resigned his position, albeit with apparent reluctance, in Mediolanum (now Milan). Following the destabilization of the subsequent tetrarchy, Maximian attempted to regain power in 307 to support his son Maxentius’s claim to the throne.

However, following Diocletian’s persuasion, he abdicated once more in 308 and spent his final days at Constantine’s court, who had married his daughter Fausta. Maximian’s took his own life after a failed revolt against Constantine.
