Emperor Elagabalus, originally named Varius Avitus Bassianus, assumed power at the tender age of 14. His reign, spanning from AD 218 to 222, was marked by a series of unconventional and often controversial decisions. Elagabalus aimed to reshape the Roman Empire’s religious landscape by promoting the worship of the deity Elagabalus (Sol Invictus) above all others. However, this radical devotion clashed with traditional Roman religious practices, leading to tensions within society.
Elagabalus’ religious fervor extended to his personal life, including his desire to marry and promote the cult of Elagabalus through his royal household. One of his most significant actions was marrying Vestal Virgin Julia Aquilia Severa—a scandalous move that directly challenged centuries of sacred tradition. As a result, this act outraged the Roman elite and religious authorities alike.
The emperor’s unconventional behavior extended beyond religious matters. Elagabalus exhibited lavish and extravagant behavior, which contradicted the modest and austere values upheld by traditional Roman leadership. His lifestyle choices, including cross-dressing and adopting feminine titles, further strained his relationships with the military and conservative elements of Roman society.
Elagabalus’ attempts to consolidate power and shape the empire’s direction resulted in resentment among the Praetorian Guard and the Roman populace. His reckless actions and disregard for tradition, as well as his preference for his own religious beliefs over those of Rome’s pantheon, culminated in a growing desire among key power players to remove him from the throne.
In AD 222, the conspirators carried out a successful plot to assassinate Elagabalus when he was only 18 or 19 years old. Following his death, his cousin Alexander Severus succeeded him as emperor.
