Historical Significance

The U.S. Virgin Islands quarter is the fifth release in the one-year 2009 DC & U.S. Territories Quarters Program, issued after the conclusion of the 50 State Quarters. Released on September 28, 2009, it honors the Caribbean territory acquired by the United States from Denmark in 1917 and long shaped by Arawak, Taino, Carib, and European influences. The reverse design weaves together geography and identity: the island trio, official bird and flower, and tyre palm stand behind the motto “United in Pride and Hope,” capturing the territory’s natural beauty and resilient community.

Collectibility

With a mintage of 41 million—far lower than many earlier state quarters—the 2009-P U.S. Virgin Islands issue is a necessary but slightly tougher find for modern quarter and Territories-program completists. Collectors often seek lustrous, well-struck Philadelphia examples to show off the fine lines of the bananaquit, floral details, and island outline, especially when building full six-coin DC & Territories sets in matching quality.
