5th Century BC Pegasus Corinth Swastiska Incuse AR Stater NGC VG

$1,799.99

Strategically located on the Isthmus of Corinth, the city was a major trade hub linking northern and southern Greece. Originally settled by Phoenicians and later refounded by Aeolian Greeks, Corinth quickly amassed wealth through its twin ports on the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs and its control of land and sea trade routes.

By the latter half of the 6th century BC, Corinth became one of the first mainland Greek cities to issue coinage. The Pegasos stater was adopted as its signature coin type, honoring the city’s mythical hero Bellerophon, who tamed the winged horse. The reverse swastika incuse—an archaic design inherited from Aegina—would soon evolve into the famous Athena Chalinos motif.
