Historical Significance
Released on January 3, 2000, the Massachusetts quarter is the sixth coin of the 50 State Quarters Program and the first of the new millennium. Its reverse features the famous Minuteman statue at North Bridge in Concord, symbolizing the citizen-soldiers who confronted British troops at the opening of the American Revolutionary War.
Set against an outline of the Commonwealth and the inscription “THE BAY STATE,” the design links Massachusetts’ Revolutionary legacy—“the shot heard ’round the world”—with its enduring identity as a coastal New England state that played a central role in the birth of the United States.
Collectibility
With more than 628 million pieces struck at Philadelphia, the 2000-P Massachusetts State Quarter is plentiful in circulation, but sharply struck, lustrous examples with minimal contact marks are much scarcer and sought after for high-grade 50 State Quarters sets.
Collectors often build a four-coin Massachusetts lineup—2000-P, 2000-D, 2000-S clad proof, and 2000-S silver proof—using the P-mint business strike as the core circulation representative of the Minuteman/“Bay State” design. Attractive coins pulled from original rolls or mint sets remain the preferred choice for albums, modern type sets, and registry-style collections.
