Emperor History:

Maximilian I was an Austrian archduke who became Emperor of Mexico in 1864 with the support of Napoleon III of France and Mexican monarchists. His government faced strong resistance from Republican forces led by Benito Juárez. After French troops withdrew, Maximilian’s empire collapsed, and he was captured and executed in 1867. His brief reign produced a distinctive series of Mexican Imperial coinage that remains highly collectible today.
