Design & Devices
George T. Morgan’s obverse features a classical portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with wheat and cotton. Thirteen stars represent the original colonies, while the date appears beneath the portrait.
The reverse depicts a heraldic American eagle surrounded by a wreath, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR. The coveted CC mint mark identifies the coin as having been struck at Carson City.
GSA Morgan Dollar History
Large quantities of Morgan Dollars remained stored in U.S. Treasury vaults for decades. When substantial holdings of previously undistributed Carson City dollars were identified, the federal government eventually authorized the General Services Administration to sell them directly to the public.
The GSA sales of the 1970s and early 1980s placed many Carson City Morgan Dollars into distinctive government holders. Coins preserved in these original GSA holders are now widely collected as a specialized part of the Morgan Dollar series.
