Historical Significance
New Hampshire’s design celebrates both its rugged landscape and independent spirit. The Old Man of the Mountain—once a natural rock profile overlooking Franconia Notch—became an enduring state symbol long before its collapse in 2003. Paired with the Revolutionary-era motto “Live Free or Die” and nine stars to mark New Hampshire as the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, the coin captures the state’s role in early American history and its proud tradition of self-determination.
Collectibility
While heavily produced for circulation, the 2000-D New Hampshire State Quarter is essential for any complete 50 State Quarters set. Collectors target bright, original examples with strong luster and minimal contact marks, which are much scarcer than typical pocket-change pieces. This Denver issue is often combined with its 2000-P counterpart and the 2000-S clad and silver proofs to form a four-coin New Hampshire group centered on the now-vanished Old Man of the Mountain design.
