Historical Significance

Released on October 16, 2000 as the 10th coin of the 50 State Quarters Program, the Virginia design commemorates the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, founded in 1607 as the first permanent English settlement in North America.

The reverse depicts the three small wooden ships—Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery—that sailed from England carrying the original colonists to the Chesapeake. Their arrival at Jamestown helped establish England’s lasting foothold in the New World and set the stage for the future United States.

Collectibility

The 2000-S Virginia Gem Proof (clad) is the premium non-silver version of this popular design. With a mintage just over 4 million—tiny compared to the nearly 1.6 billion P and D circulation strikes—it offers an attractive combination of limited production and affordable entry price.

Collectors often assemble a four-coin Virginia lineup (2000-P, 2000-D, 2000-S clad Gem Proof, and 2000-S silver Gem Proof). Deep-cameo clad proofs with clean fields and strong mirrors are ideal for albums, modern type sets, and State Quarter registry builds centered on eye-appeal rather than melt value.
