Historical Significance

Released January 29, 2007, the Montana quarter honors the 41st state, admitted to the Union on November 8, 1889. The reverse design centers on a bison skull—an image long associated with the art and spiritual traditions of the Northern Plains and Montana’s Tribal Nations—floating above a panorama of mountains, plains, and river that captures the state’s “Big Sky Country” nickname.

The bison skull motif recalls Western artwork popularized by Montana artists and symbolizes the rugged, sometimes harsh environment that shaped the region’s ranching, Native, and frontier history.

Collectibility

As the first 2007 State Quarter with a mintage of 257 million P-mint coins, the 2007-P Montana issue is widely available yet essential for any complete 50 State Quarters set. Collectors favor lustrous Uncirculated examples where the fine details of the skull, mountain ridges, and river remain sharp. High-end certified pieces in MS67 and above can bring solid premiums among registry collectors, while error hunters watch for missing clad layers, die cracks in the skull and lettering, and other striking anomalies that occasionally appear on this issue.
