Emperor History:
Claudius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 41 to 54 after succeeding his nephew Caligula. Despite initially being underestimated by members of the imperial court, Claudius proved to be an active administrator who expanded Roman territory, most notably through the conquest of Britain beginning in AD 43. His reign also saw extensive public works and improvements to the administration of Rome’s provinces.
Collectibility:
Alexandrian provincial coins provide a fascinating combination of Roman imperial and traditional Egyptian imagery. This Year 11 Claudius diobol is especially representative of that cultural blend, pairing the Roman emperor with the Egyptian Nile god Nilus.
