AD 193-211 Roman Empire Septimius Severus, British Victory AR Denarius NGC XF

$314.99

In AD 208, Septimius Severus personally led a massive military expedition to Britain, accompanied by his sons Caracalla and Geta. The campaign sought to suppress northern tribes and reassert Roman authority beyond Hadrian’s Wall. Although the Romans achieved several victories, the harsh terrain and guerrilla warfare made permanent conquest difficult. These “British Victory” denarii were struck to celebrate the campaign and project imperial strength throughout the empire.

Emperor History: Septimius Severus (AD 193-211)

Septimius Severus rose to power during the turbulent “Year of the Five Emperors” in AD 193. After defeating rival claimants, he founded the Severan Dynasty and strengthened the Roman military through increased pay and reforms. His reign expanded Roman influence in Africa, the East, and Britain. Severus spent his final years campaigning in Britain and died at Eboracum (modern York) in AD 211. His famous advice to his sons was: “Be harmonious, enrich the soldiers, and scorn all other men.”

British Victory denarii are among the most popular coins of Septimius Severus due to their direct connection to Rome’s campaigns in Britain and the emperor’s final years.
