Historical Significance
Authorized by Congress and launched in 2007, the United States Mint issued four Presidential $1 coins per year honoring deceased U.S. presidents in order of service.
The program ran from 2007 through 2016, concluding with President Ronald Reagan. In 2020, a special issue honored George H. W. Bush under separate legislation.
A notable aspect of the series is its edge-lettering, which marked a modern return to edge inscriptions in U.S. coinage.
Collectibility
A complete P & D mint set (2007–2021) represents a popular modern U.S. dollar collection. Key collector points include:
-
Early edge-lettering varieties
-
Lower mintages in later years after circulation production was reduced
-
The standalone 2020 George H.W. Bush issue
-
Building date-and-mintmark albums or registry-style sets
For modern U.S. collectors, this two-mint format provides a clean, complete representation of the Presidential Dollar era without adding proof-only issues.
