Historical Significance
Launched in 2007, the U.S. Mint’s Presidential $1 Coin Program honored America’s presidents with bold, modern portraiture and a uniform Statue of Liberty reverse design. The Mint issued four Presidential $1 coins per year from 2007 through 2016, and later issued a George H. W. Bush Presidential $1 coin in 2020 under separate authorizing legislation.
A key turning point for the series came in late 2011, when the Treasury directed the Mint to suspend minting and issuing Presidential dollars for circulation, meeting circulating demand through existing Federal Reserve inventories.
Collectibility
This is a classic “completionist” U.S. dollar series: consistent reverse design, instantly recognizable portraits, and a strong collecting structure by mint mark and finish. Three-mint (P/D/S) collecting adds depth—especially when pairing business strikes with San Francisco proofs—while the edge-lettered format gives specialists extra variety to study across the run.
