What Does the NGC ★ (Star) Designation Mean?

The NGC Star (★) designation is reserved for coins with exceptional eye appeal that stand out even among other examples of the same grade. Only a small percentage of coins submitted to NGC receive this prestigious distinction.

Historical Significance:

This sestertius was struck during the chaotic Year of the Six Emperors in AD 238. Following the revolt against Maximinus I Thrax, the Roman Senate elected Pupienus and Balbinus as co-emperors to restore order to the empire.

The reverse depicting Victory reflects hopes for military and political success. Despite these aspirations, both emperors ruled for only a few months before being assassinated by the Praetorian Guard.

Coins of Pupienus are scarce due to his extremely brief reign, making attractive, high-grade examples especially desirable.

Emperor History: Pupienus (AD 238)

Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus rose from relatively humble origins to become one of Rome’s most capable military and political leaders. Prior to his elevation as emperor, he served as governor, general, and Urban Prefect of Rome.

In AD 238, amid widespread unrest, the Senate selected Pupienus and Balbinus as joint emperors in opposition to Maximinus Thrax. Pupienus successfully organized military resistance, but tensions within Rome and hostility from the Praetorian Guard ultimately proved fatal.

After a reign lasting only about three months, both emperors were murdered, ushering in the reign of Gordian III.

Because of his short reign, coins of Pupienus remain among the scarcer and more historically significant issues of the Roman Empire.

Collectibility:

Large bronze sestertii of Pupienus are highly sought after by collectors of Roman Imperial coinage. Examples displaying strong strikes, attractive surfaces, and exceptional eye appeal are especially prized. The prestigious NGC Star designation, coupled with the outstanding 5/5 strike, places this example among the most visually appealing survivors of this elusive emperor. Find more alike here!
