Historical Significance:
The letters “SUD” are generally interpreted as an abbreviation of Sud (South), identifying the revolutionary southern army under Morelos. Unlike traditional colonial silver coinage, these copper issues were produced under difficult wartime conditions and circulated extensively throughout insurgent-held regions.
Leader History:
José María Morelos y Pavón (1765–1815) was one of the principal leaders of the Mexican War of Independence following the death of Miguel Hidalgo. A skilled military commander and political strategist, Morelos organized revolutionary forces across southern Mexico and convened the Congress of Chilpancingo, which formally declared Mexican independence in 1813.
Morelos advocated for national sovereignty, social equality, and the abolition of slavery. His insurgent government issued emergency coinage, including the famous Oaxaca SUD pieces, to finance military operations and establish economic stability in liberated territories. Although captured and executed in 1815, Morelos remains one of Mexico’s most celebrated national heroes.
Collectibility:
The 1813 Oaxaca 2 Reales (KM-245) is a notably scarce denomination within the famous SUD insurgent series. While all Oaxaca revolutionary coinage is sought after, the 2 Reales is encountered far less frequently than many of the lower-denomination copper issues and is considerably more elusive than most collectors realize.
Produced under wartime conditions and heavily circulated, surviving examples are often found with corrosion, environmental damage, weak strikes, or other impairments. Well-preserved specimens are difficult to locate, making certified examples especially desirable.
