Historical Significance

  • The Seated Liberty Half Dime was struck from 1837–1873 and represents one of the earliest small silver denominations in U.S. coinage.

  • The 1862 proof issue was produced during the Civil War, a time when silver coins were hoarded and vanished from circulation. Proofs of this year were intended for collectors, making them historical artifacts as well as numismatic treasures.

  • Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Seated Liberty motif became one of the longest-running designs in U.S. coinage.

Mintage & Rarity

  • Proof Mintage (1862): Only 550 pieces were struck.

  • Very few survive in the pristine PF67 Cameo grade, with most proofs of this date exhibiting only modest contrast.

  • Cameo-designated gems with PCGS certification and CAC-level eye appeal are considered elite survivors.
