Design & Devices

The obverse of each denomination features the left-facing portrait of King George V, surrounded by his royal titles. The 1911 coinage marked the first year that George V’s portrait appeared on British circulating denominations following the death of Edward VII in 1910.

The reverses progress through the classic designs of Britain’s Maundy and larger silver denominations. The Penny through Fourpence feature their respective denomination designs, while the Sixpence, Shilling, Florin, and Half Crown display increasingly elaborate British royal and heraldic motifs.

This particular set is especially attractive for its natural toning, which gives the individual Proof surfaces distinctive coloration while maintaining a cohesive appearance across the eight-piece group.

Historical Significance

The year 1911 was the coronation year of King George V, who was formally crowned alongside Queen Mary at Westminster Abbey on June 22, 1911. Special Proof coinage was produced in connection with the new monarch’s first coinage, making the 1911 Proof issues an important part of British numismatic history.

Collectibility

Complete 1911 silver Proof sets are desirable in their own right, but this group is further distinguished by the remarkable consistency of its certification: all eight coins have received the identical PCGS PR66 grade. Find more alike here!
