Gold Standing Liberty Quarter Design
The gold coin recreates the celebrated 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter design by sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil. Liberty stands between the walls of a gateway, holding a shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right. The design retains the historic 1916 date and incorporates a special Liberty Bell “250” privy mark commemorating the United States Semiquincentennial. The reverse depicts an eagle in flight surrounded by 13 stars.
Silver Companion Medal
The one-ounce .999 fine silver medal offers a modern artistic interpretation inspired by the Standing Liberty Quarter. The obverse depicts a windswept Liberty holding her shield while extending olive branches toward an eagle in the distance. The shield incorporates 50 rivets representing the states and 13 stripes representing the original colonies. The reverse continues the scene with the eagle holding the olive branches, surrounded by 13 stars.
Historical Significance
First introduced in 1916, the Standing Liberty Quarter is one of the landmark designs of the early 20th-century renaissance in American coinage. The original quarter was produced from 1916 through 1930 and remains one of the most recognizable U.S. silver coin designs.
For the Nation’s 250th anniversary, the U.S. Mint selected five historic designs for the Best of the Mint series: the 1916 Mercury Dime, 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, 1804 Silver Dollar, and 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin.
