Design & Devices
Each coin features the left-facing portrait of King George V by Bertram Mackennal on the obverse. The reverses showcase a variety of British heraldic motifs and the redesigned coinage introduced in 1927.
The centerpiece is the Wreath Crown, featuring a large royal crown surrounded by a wreath incorporating roses, thistles, and shamrocks representing England, Scotland, and Ireland. The Royal Mint identifies George Kruger Gray as the reverse designer and confirms the 1927 Crown was struck in .500 silver.
Historical Significance
The 1927 Proof Set marked the introduction of George V’s redesigned silver coinage. The new reverses by George Kruger Gray brought a more modern interpretation of British heraldic designs to the Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling, Florin, Half Crown, and Crown.
The Wreath Crown became particularly notable. The design proved popular enough to continue in subsequent years, with the Royal Mint noting that later Wreath Crowns were produced in small quantities and were traditionally stocked by the Bank of England for presentation to valued clients.
Collectibility
With only 15,000 Proof sets produced, the 1927 issue is an important George V set. This particular group is especially desirable because all six original silver denominations remain together and are individually certified by PCGS, with grades ranging from PR64 through PR66.
The PCGS PR64 Wreath Crown serves as the centerpiece of the set and represents the first year of one of the most recognizable British Crown designs of the George V period. Find more alike here!
