Historical Significance
The Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar was struck during 1975 and 1976, which is why no Eisenhower Dollars exist bearing a 1975 date. The special reverse design was selected through a national competition and celebrates the nation’s 200th anniversary. The dollar was released alongside the Bicentennial Quarter and Half Dollar as part of the nation’s largest circulating commemorative coinage program.
Collectibility
The 1976-D Eisenhower Dollar was issued in two reverse varieties:
- Type 1: Bold, block-style lettering
- Type 2: Sharper, thinner lettering
The Denver Mint struck 21,048,710 Type 1 examples and 82,179,564 Type 2 examples, making the Type 1 the scarcer variety. Both remain popular with Bicentennial and Eisenhower Dollar collectors, especially in high-grade BU and certified Mint State condition.
