Historical Significance
The Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar was produced in 1975 and 1976, with no dollars bearing a 1975 date. The special reverse design was selected through a nationwide competition to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Proof examples were included in the annual U.S. Proof Sets sold to collectors.
Collectibility
The 1976-S Clad Proof exists in two distinct varieties:
- Type 1: Bold, block-style reverse lettering
- Type 2: Sharper, thinner lettering with serifs
The Type 1 proof was issued only in the 1975 Proof Set, while the Type 2 proof was issued only in the 1976 Proof Set. Collectors often pursue both varieties to complete a Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar set.
