Under normal printing situations a sheet of currency feeds between the printing plate and the impression cylinder. When the paper fails to enter the press, the printing plate hits the cylinder and leaves the ink impression. When subsequent sheets are fed through they will not only pick up the correct impression from the intended printing plate, but also the ink from where the plate hit the cylinder. This creates what is known as a offset error with the image in retrograde.
