Historical Significance

Released on January 3, 2000, the Massachusetts State Quarter was the first quarter of the new millennium and the sixth issue in the 50 State Quarters Program.

The reverse honors the citizen-soldiers of the American Revolution via the Minuteman statue at Concord’s North Bridge—symbol of those ready to fight at “a minute’s notice” and of the “shot heard ’round the world.” Set against the outline of Massachusetts and the inscription “THE BAY STATE,” the design links the Commonwealth’s Revolutionary legacy to its enduring coastal New England identity and early statehood in 1788.

Collectibility

The 2000-S Massachusetts Gem Proof (Silver) combines low silver-proof mintage (965,421 coins), a popular Minuteman design, and 0.1808 troy ounce of 90% silver.

Significantly scarcer than the 628+ million P-mint and 535+ million D-mint business strikes, this silver proof serves as the premium version for Massachusetts in both full State Quarter runs and modern silver type sets. Collectors often build a four-coin Massachusetts lineup—2000-P, 2000-D, 2000-S clad Gem Proof, and this 2000-S silver Gem Proof—using deep-cameo, problem-free examples as album centerpieces or grading candidates.
