Historical Significance

Released May 21, 2001, the Rhode Island quarter honors the 13th state, admitted to the Union on May 29, 1790. The “Ocean State” theme reflects Rhode Island’s 400-plus miles of coastline and its reputation as a sailing capital: the vintage yacht and Pell Bridge capture the look of Narragansett Bay, home to major regattas and America’s Cup competition.

The design draws attention to how a small state leveraged its deep harbors and maritime culture, from colonial trade to modern recreation, making coastal scenery and sailing central to its identity.

Collectibility

With over 423 million P-mint pieces struck, the 2001-P Rhode Island State Quarter is common in circulation but essential for any complete 50 State Quarters set. Collectors look for bright Uncirculated examples that show sharp rigging on the sailboat, clean bridge detail, and minimal marks in the open water fields.

Error and variety hunters also watch this issue for off-center strikes, broadstrikes, die cracks, and partial-clad-layer pieces recorded on Rhode Island quarters, which can bring solid premiums when found in high grade.
