Historical Significance

Ohio entered the Union on March 1, 1803 as the 17th state, and its quarter—released March 11, 2002—highlights the state’s central role in both early aviation and the Space Age. The combination of Wright Flyer and astronaut honors aviation pioneers from Ohio, including Orville Wright, John Glenn, and Neil Armstrong, and acknowledges that key development and testing for the Wrights’ 1905 Flyer took place in the state.

Collectibility

The 2002-P Ohio quarter carries a moderate circulation mintage, and Ohio’s overall P+D output is the lowest combined total among the 2002 State Quarter issues, giving it extra interest for series specialists. Bright Uncirculated examples with sharp detail on the biplane rigging, astronaut suit, and state outline are especially attractive in modern quarter albums.

Error and variety collectors also watch this issue for doubled-die obverse pieces and die cracks or chips around the astronaut and lettering—small anomalies that can bring notable premiums when found in high grade.
