Historical Significance

Released June 6, 2005, the Oregon quarter honors the 33rd state, admitted to the Union on February 14, 1859. The reverse showcases Crater Lake—America’s deepest lake—formed within the collapsed caldera of Mount Mazama about 7,700 years ago. Wizard Island, a cinder cone rising from the lake’s surface, and the surrounding pines highlight Oregon’s volcanic past and its long tradition of forest and park conservation.

By focusing on a national park rather than people or industry, the design captures Oregon’s reputation for rugged natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and environmental stewardship in the Cascade Range.

Collectibility

With over 316 million P-mint pieces struck, the 2005-P Oregon State Quarter is common in circulation but essential for any complete 50 State Quarters set. Collectors favor bright Uncirculated examples where the crater rim, trees, and island contours are sharp and the open water fields remain free of heavy marks.

High-grade certified coins in MS67 and above can command strong premiums, and specialists also watch for missing-clad-layer errors, strong die cracks, and other eye-catching mint anomalies that occasionally appear on this scenic design.
