Historical Significance

Admitted on March 1, 1867, Nebraska became the 37th state, and its quarter—released April 3, 2006—celebrates the great westward migration across the Plains. Chimney Rock, a 445-foot spire rising from the North Platte River valley, served as a critical landmark along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, reassuring emigrant wagon trains that they were on the right path to new opportunities in the West.

The covered wagon and radiant sun underscore the “pioneer spirit” that defined 19th-century Nebraska, while the 1867 date links the design to statehood and the Cornhusker State’s emergence from frontier territory to part of the Union.

Collectibility

With a hefty 318 million P-mint circulation mintage, the 2006-P Nebraska State Quarter is widely available yet essential for a complete 50 State Quarters run. Collectors favor lustrous Uncirculated examples that show crisp detail in the oxen, wagon, and layers of Chimney Rock, as the open fields can reveal bag marks.

The issue has also gained attention for dramatic die cracks and chips—especially those radiating from the sun sometimes nicknamed “solar flare” varieties—as well as missing clad layers and other striking anomalies, which can command solid premiums when certified.
