Historical Significance
South Dakota was the 40th coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program and the fifth issue of 2006. The design commemorates South Dakota’s admission to the Union in 1889 and emphasizes two of the state’s best-known themes: Mount Rushmore and its state bird, the Chinese ring-necked pheasant.
Collectibility
The 2006-S South Dakota clad proof is a strong choice for collectors building complete State Quarter proof sets, modern U.S. proof quarter runs, or South Dakota-themed collections. Its mirrored proof finish, iconic Mount Rushmore reverse, and San Francisco proof format give it broad appeal, while the separate silver proof version offers a scarcer companion for set builders.
