Design

The obverse features John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington. The reverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts the Grand Canyon with a saguaro cactus in the foreground. A banner inscribed “Grand Canyon State” separates the two elements to emphasize that saguaro cacti do not naturally grow within the Grand Canyon. The reverse also bears the inscriptions “Arizona,” “1912,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”

Collectibility

Released into circulation on June 2, 2008, the 2008-D Arizona State Quarter is a popular addition to collections commemorating the final year of the 50 State Quarters Program. Its distinctive design honoring one of America’s most recognizable natural landmarks makes it a favorite among modern U.S. coin collectors.
