Design
The obverse features John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington. The reverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts the Grand Canyon with a saguaro cactus in the foreground. A banner inscribed “Grand Canyon State” separates the two elements, emphasizing that saguaro cacti do not naturally grow within the Grand Canyon. The reverse also includes the inscriptions “Arizona,” “1912,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”

Released only in U.S. Mint Clad Proof Sets, the 2008-S Arizona State Quarter Gem Proof is a popular addition to modern U.S. coin collections. As one of the final five State Quarters issued, it marks the conclusion of the landmark 50 State Quarters Program while honoring one of America’s most recognizable natural landmarks.
