Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington, updated by William Cousins, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.

Reverse:
The reverse depicts an ava bowl (tanoa), whisk, and ceremonial staff in the foreground with a coconut tree along the shoreline in the background. The ava bowl is used during important ceremonial gatherings, while the whisk and staff symbolize the authority of Samoan orators. The design also bears the inscriptions “AMERICAN SAMOA,” “SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA” (“Samoa, God is First”), “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “2009.”

Collectibility

The 2009-S American Samoa Proof Quarter was issued only in the 2009 District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Clad Proof Set and was never released into circulation. With a mintage of 2,113,478, it is a popular addition to complete clad proof quarter collections and the final chapter of the State and Territorial Quarters series.
