Historical Significance
Located on Sullivan’s Island in Charleston Harbor, Fort Moultrie is part of Fort Sumter National Monument and served as a critical coastal defense from the Revolutionary War through World War II. In 1860, Union troops evacuated Fort Moultrie for Fort Sumter, setting the stage for the opening shots of the Civil War.
Collectibility
The 2016-D Fort Moultrie Quarter is popular with America the Beautiful collectors and Civil War history enthusiasts. Circulated examples are common, while well-struck uncirculated coins with sharp detail and original luster are preferred for complete date-and-mint sets.
