The United States Mint released the 2025 Native American $1 Coin on January 28, 2025, honoring Mary Kawena Pukui—a distinguished Hawaiian scholar, author, composer, dancer, and educator. This coin marks the first time a Native Hawaiian is featured in the Native American $1 Coin Program.
Design Details:
-
Obverse (Heads): Continues to feature Glenna Goodacre’s enduring design of Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, as introduced in 2000.
-
Reverse (Tails): Depicts Mary Kawena Pukui adorned with a hibiscus flower, a kukui nut lei, and a muʻumuʻu with an aloha print. Stylized water elements form the background. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$1,” and “Nānā I Ke Kumu,” translating to “Look to the Source,” referencing a series of books co-authored by Pukui. The design was crafted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.
