NGC Strike & Surface Ratings
NGC Ancients separately evaluates strike quality and surface preservation, providing collectors with a more complete assessment than a traditional grade alone.
- Strike 5/5: Represents the highest possible strike rating. The design was sharply impressed from fresh dies, preserving exceptional detail throughout both the portrait and reverse devices.
- Surface 3/5: Indicates honest circulation and handling over nearly two millennia while retaining pleasing original surfaces. Minor marks are expected on ancient gold coinage and do not diminish the coin’s historical importance.
A perfect 5/5 Strike on an ancient Aureus is highly desirable, as many Roman gold coins exhibit weak striking or incomplete details due to ancient minting techniques.
Emperor History: Nero (AD 54–68)
Nero became emperor at just sixteen years of age following the death of his adoptive father, Emperor Claudius. Initially guided by the philosopher Seneca and the Praetorian Prefect Burrus, the early years of his reign were marked by effective administration and relative stability.
Over time, however, Nero became increasingly associated with political purges, extravagant spending, and public controversy. His reign witnessed major events including the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64, the persecution of Christians, and numerous military campaigns throughout the empire.
Growing opposition eventually led to widespread rebellion. In AD 68, abandoned by the Senate and military leadership, Nero took his own life, bringing the Julio-Claudian dynasty to an end and plunging Rome into the Year of the Four Emperors.
Despite his controversial legacy, Nero remains one of the most recognizable figures of Roman history, and his gold Aurei rank among the most iconic imperial coins ever struck.
Collectibility
Gold Aurei of Nero are among the cornerstone issues of ancient Roman numismatics. Collectors prize them for their historical significance, artistic portraits, and intrinsic gold content. This example’s perfect 5/5 strike, attractive portrait, and classic Concordia reverse make it an outstanding representative of one of Rome’s most famous emperors.
