The Presidential $1 Coin Program pays homage to former U.S. presidents. Each year, the U.S. Mint releases four new coins featuring portraits of these leaders on the obverse and the Statue of Liberty on the reverse. Only deceased presidents are eligible for this program.
Controversially, the motto “In God We Trust” was originally placed on the coin’s edge. Some 2007 Presidential dollars lacked edge lettering, prompting the U.S. Mint to relocate the motto to the obverse.
Presidential dollars have a pure copper core and an outer layer of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, and 4% nickel. Each coin measures 26.5 mm in diameter and weighs 8.10 grams.
