Historical Context:
Marcus Junius Brutus and C. Cassius Longinus fled to Greece in August of 44 BC, following the assassination of Caesar. They collected an immense war chest to prepare for their confrontation against Antony and Octavian. The historian Appian recounts that L. Brutus struck coins from treasures consigned by Polemocratia, widow of the Thracian dynast Sadalas. Although the identity of “Koson” remains uncertain, it is believed to be the coinage of L. Brutus described by Appian. The designs express Brutus’ propaganda perfectly: the obverse represents the historic fight against tyranny, while the reverse represents the victorious Roman eagle.
