Reverse: Portions of the original Spanish colonial 8 Reales design and peripheral legends remain visible beneath extensive circulation wear. The heavily worn host emphasizes the coin’s long period of actual monetary use.

Historical Significance

During the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821), insurgent forces frequently faced shortages of officially produced coinage. Existing silver coins were therefore countermarked or otherwise validated for circulation in territories controlled by revolutionary forces.

Chilpanzingo, in present-day Guerrero, became an important center of the independence movement. It was there that the Congress of Chilpanzingo convened in 1813, closely associating the region with José María Morelos and the developing movement for an independent Mexican state.

The insurgent counterstamp transforms an earlier Spanish colonial coin into a tangible artifact of Mexico’s transition from colonial rule toward independence.

Collectibility

Mexican War of Independence countermarked 8 Reales are collected for both their numismatic complexity and direct connection to the insurgent period. Each surviving example can vary substantially according to its host coin, counterstamp placement, wear, and preservation.

NGC has authenticated this example as a Chilpanzingo counterstamp with the F Standard designation, grading the host coin Good Details with an Obverse Scratched notation. Find more alike here!
