Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar Design
The gold coin recreates Adolph A. Weinman’s celebrated 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The obverse depicts Liberty walking toward the rising sun with the American flag flowing behind her while carrying branches of laurel and oak. A special Liberty Bell “250” privy mark commemorates the Nation’s Semiquincentennial.
The reverse features an American eagle standing on a rocky mountaintop with its wings raised. A pine sapling emerges from the rock, symbolizing strength and resilience.
Silver Companion Medal
The one-ounce .999 fine silver companion medal reimagines elements of Weinman’s original Walking Liberty design in an Art Deco-inspired composition. The scene flows across both sides of the medal.
The obverse depicts Liberty extending her right hand while carrying branches in her left, with the sun and landscape continuing into the reverse. The reverse completes the scene with an eagle soaring above the landscape, representing American freedom.
Historical Significance
First introduced in 1916, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman and remained in production through 1947. Its depiction of Liberty became one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatics and was later selected for the obverse of the American Silver Eagle beginning in 1986.
For the United States’ 250th anniversary, the U.S. Mint selected the Walking Liberty Half Dollar as one of five historic designs to be recreated in 24-karat gold for the special Best of the Mint series.
Collectibility
With a maximum mintage of only 30,000 sets, this release combines a half-ounce of 99.99% fine gold with a full ounce of .999 fine silver. The special 250th anniversary Liberty Bell privy mark, limited production, and connection to one of America’s most recognizable coin designs make the set an important component of the 2026 Semiquincentennial program.
