Proof coinage resumed in 1968 after production was suspended from 1965 through 1967. The 1968-S Jefferson Nickel was part of the first U.S. proof set produced at the San Francisco Mint, establishing San Francisco as the permanent home of regular U.S. proof coinage beginning that year.
The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left, with LIBERTY, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST surrounding the portrait. The reverse depicts Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia home, with MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The S mintmark appears below the date on the obverse.
The 1968-S Jefferson Nickel was struck in the traditional 75% copper and 25% nickel composition. It weighs 5 grams and measures 21.2 mm in diameter with a plain edge.
