Design

The obverse features John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington. The reverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts the Grand Canyon with a saguaro cactus in the foreground. A banner inscribed “Grand Canyon State” separates the two elements, emphasizing that saguaro cacti do not naturally grow within the Grand Canyon. The reverse also bears the inscriptions “Arizona,” “1912,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”

Collectibility

Issued exclusively in the 2008 U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set, the 2008-S Arizona State Quarter Gem Proof (Silver) combines the beauty of a proof finish with the appeal of a 90% silver composition. As one of the final five State Quarters released, it is an essential addition for collectors assembling complete State Quarters or modern U.S. silver proof collections.
