Design
Obverse:
John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington, updated by William Cousins, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
Reverse:
An outline of Guam is paired with a flying proa, a traditional Chamorro sailing canoe, and a latte stone, the ancient stone pillars used as foundations for Chamorro homes. The design also bears the inscriptions “GUAM,” “GUAHAN I TANÓ MANCHAMORRO,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “2009,” celebrating the island’s indigenous culture and seafaring heritage.
Collectibility
The 2009-S Guam Proof Quarter was issued only in the 2009 District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Clad Proof Set and was never released into circulation. With a mintage of 2,113,478, it is a popular addition to complete clad proof quarter collections and the final chapter of the State and Territorial Quarters series.
