Design
Obverse:
John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington, updated by William Cousins, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
Reverse:
A large limestone latte stone stands beside a Carolinian canoe sailing across the water, with two white fairy terns in flight and a flowering mwar tree completing the design. The inscriptions include “COMMONWEALTH OF THE NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “2009,” honoring the islands’ indigenous heritage and maritime traditions.
Collectibility
The 2009-S Northern Mariana Islands Proof Quarter was issued only in the 2009 District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Clad Proof Set and was never released into circulation. Its attractive proof finish, historical significance as the final coin in the State and Territorial Quarters program, and mintage of 2,113,478 make it a popular addition to modern U.S. proof quarter collections.
