Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington, updated by William Cousins, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”

Reverse:
An outline of the three principal U.S. Virgin Islands—St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John—is surrounded by a bananaquit, the territory’s official bird, yellow elder blossoms, the official flower, and a Tyre palm tree. The design also includes the inscriptions “U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “2009,” highlighting the islands’ tropical landscape and unique identity.

Collectibility

Issued only as part of the 2009 U.S. Mint District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Clad Proof Set, the 2009-S U.S. Virgin Islands Proof Quarter was never released into circulation. With a mintage of 2,113,478, it remains a popular addition to complete clad proof quarter collections and the final chapter of the State and Territorial Quarters series.
