Historical Significance

Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is best known for its role in the War of 1812, when American forces successfully defended the fort during the Battle of Baltimore. The sight of the fort’s massive flag flying after the bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner, which later became the national anthem of the United States. The reverse design emphasizes national resilience, freedom, and enduring patriotism.

Collectibility

The 2013-D Fort McHenry Quarter is a cornerstone issue for America the Beautiful collectors and those interested in U.S. military history. Circulated examples are readily available, while sharply struck uncirculated coins with bold details and strong luster are preferred for complete date-and-mint collections.
