About Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
Established in 1940, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park preserves the historic mountain pass where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet. For centuries, Native Americans, explorers, and pioneers used the gap as a natural route through the Appalachian Mountains. During the late 18th century, pioneers such as Daniel Boone helped open the Wilderness Road through Cumberland Gap, enabling westward expansion into the frontier.
