Obverse: Features John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington, a design familiar to collectors of the Washington Quarter series.

Reverse: Depicts Sergeant William Jasper heroically returning the regimental flag to the fort’s ramparts during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. This famous Revolutionary War moment helped secure Fort Moultrie’s place in American history.

History of Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie is located on Sullivan’s Island near Charleston, South Carolina. Originally constructed from palmetto logs, the fort successfully defended Charleston Harbor against a powerful British naval attack on June 28, 1776.

The victory was a major morale boost for the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. In fact, the palmetto tree became an enduring symbol of South Carolina and remains featured on the state’s flag today.

Over the following centuries, Fort Moultrie evolved through multiple construction phases and continued serving the United States military through World War II. Today, the site is preserved as part of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park.
