The obverse, designed by famed U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan, features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln with his name along the border.
The reverse, also designed by George T. Morgan, features an oak and laurel wreath surrounding a pine and cedar spray. A serpent with its tail in its mouth symbolizes eternity and immortality. The inscriptions commemorate Lincoln’s first and second inaugurations and his assassination in April 1865.
